Update and other news

So....this weekend was great and I'm glad to have it over. Saturday night the banquet performances went great. Sunday mine and Allyson's auditions went great. Sunday night the performance was great. Cameron and his parents came over to it. Also, yesterday we had competition. We DID NOT advance; however, I had 2 students get technician awards and three students get acting awards. So, that is great. It's bittersweet- nice to have over but I'm sad that we didn't get to go on in competition. Oh well- there is always next year.

This week I have theatre club fundraiser stuff to do, and dancing with the Helmbergers/Cameron on Friday night and then moving on Saturday. Joe is moving me, and Cameron and his dad are also helping. That way we can get it done in one trip. Awesome. In the afternoon I also have an audition that I am thinking of going to.

Okay, so this is the crazy thing that I have to tell you.

So, the other day I was talking to Cameron and he looks at my face and says "what are you doing with your jaw?" . Well, I am doing this thing where I sort of rotate and move my jaw back and forth. I show him what I am doing. He asks me how long I have been doing it and I say about two weeks. He asks me if it hurts, and I tell him "Yes", that I wake up with a sore jaw every morning but I just can't help it. I have to do it or I go crazy. So then he asks me to try to stop and I try but I have to concentrate so bad that it takes all of my energy and I go crazy. So then we start this conversation about this weird tic and I tell him that ever since I was little I have had these weird tics that I do. Of course, I never thought they were called ticks or knew that they were tics. I told him that I can remember the first time being when i was like 9 or 10....I started blinking my eyes really hard and it lasted about a year. Then i started moving my shoulder, and then I did this sniffing thing. I have always done it, and I have always changed habits. The length of time that I do the tic varies. I always just assumed that I got it from Mom, because she's always done those weird twitchy things.

Well, Cameron decided that he wants to research it...and he basically found out that I have this sort of mild tourettes condition that 24% of children suffer from called Transient Tic Disorder. It can be hereditary, and usually starts with blinking. It is different from tourettes in that it usually is more mild and it is only motor (muscle) tics rather than vocal tics (like we associate with people who suffer from tourettes). People who suffer from Transiet Tic develop different incontrollable tics that last in varying lengths of time. I mean, it makes perfect sense. i always wondered while I did this stuff. I thought it was normal, and I didn't know that it was a tic. Luckily, I don't feel that ridiculous as 24% of people have it. Weird. Here is some research that he found.

It is so weird. Do you all remember me doing these weird things? I definetely do. I remember a shoulder thing that I used to. A finger thing. A sniffing thing. A blinking thing. It all makes perfect sense now. Ahhh...I am so relieved.

Thank God! I am so happy that someone else has this problem. Yes, I agree about it coming from Mom. She also has a vocal one. She does that little mini-throat-clearing thing. Drives me nuts. I can always find her in a store. Mom, are you hearing all of this? Also, the articles that we found said that a lot of times this disorder will be coupled with anxiety disorder. Hmmmmm.....

Anyways, I am glad to find that I am not the only person who is royally screwed up.

Andy- what are some of your tics?

I haven't read the blog for a couple of weeks and I find that I am stepping into quite a discussion...

    Worry not...

I inhereted a few of my own that have come and gone. One constant -For most of my life I have done this shoulder thing. I have the innate ability to sense when my shirt is not perfectly symetrical on my body. When that happens an automatic reflex kicks in that twiches my shoulder and adjusts my shirt back to a perfect symetry.

Mom does a similar thing (perhaps for diffrenet reason?)

I once knew student who would clear his throat when he was nervous speaking publicly. - appaernetly a pretty common nervous tick. As the project reviews became more and more important, he got so nervous he could hardly get a work out without clearing his throat. It was really pretty disturbing.

By the way Mom- I find these nervous ticks rather charming.

-except Andy's shoulder thing - that's just freak of nature stuf.

Do you remember my blinking thing? That is not charming. It looks ridiculous. No wonder I got made fun of all the time. And the finger thing? People just thought I was retarded. This throat thing does not look cool or charming. It looks ridiculous.

That guy could be my friend. I'm a Transient Tic and he is an actual Human Tic. Did you know that Transient is a word for hobo? Well, it is. Cameron says that it's called Transient Tic Disorder because Transient refers to the fact that it moves around or is unstable or doesn't stay or something. I don't remember. Cameron, care to comment on how retarded I am?

    Dwayne? Anything?

    Mom...the culprit? Anything....?

Maybe I can also chime in on the tic issue. I started having this shoulder thing when I started dating Dwayne. I would lift my left shoulder from time to time. Its especially bad when I am at a movie theater. Because when you are suppose to sit still, I keep adjusting my shoulders because I'm never totally comfortable.

Maybe it's not a tic but we all just need a good massage on our shoulders. Dwayne definitely does the twitching shoulder thing, probably every time he gets up to walk or do something. he also chews his nails when he is stressed. The worst thing that he started doing recently is that when he writes an email, it doesn't matter how long it is. When he reads it again, he will click the mouse after every sentence. sometimes when he write emails late at night, all i hear is clicking noises.

    Anyways, enough of spilling.

Those aren't tics.....those are just habits.

I can't control the things that I am doing...especially with my face. That blinking thing was so embarassing, but it went on for 2 years. I just couldn't help it. I never had the shoulder thing very badly like everyone else. This jaw thing is really bad though. I mean, it is causing physical pain to me and I can't quit doing it. My jaw hurts so bad in the morning, but I just can't stop doing it. This tic is actually getting better though, I think because I got through a really stressful period in my life. It's calming down.

Anyway, just wanted to point out the difference between a tic and a bad habit.
